Hotel Panamericano is on the outskirts of the capital and is part of the sports facilities built in 1991 for the Pan-American Games. It is close to Santa Maria beach and the fishing village of Cojimar, the setting of Hemingway’s novel The Old Man and the Sea.

Eastwards, less than half an hour from the city centre, through the bay tunnel, lie several beaches of fine sand, stretching for 9 km: Bacuranao, El Mégano, Santa María del Mar, Boca Ciega and Guanabo. In Santa María del Mar, tourists can enjoy catamaran rides, rent jet skis, sail boats, rowboats and explore its many other attractions.
