Caguanes National Park

The Caguanes National Park is located in the Northern region of the municipality of Yaguajay, constituted by Caguanes Cay, the Guayaberas Swamp and the islets compound called Piedra Cays. It is the perfect place for the ecotourism or adventure tourism lovers. It is the nucleus of the Buenavista Biosphere Preserve and it was declared Biosphere Reservation by the UNESO. Its cave system has over 37,730 feet (11,500 meters) of galleries in more than 35 grottoes and caves, which contain the largest expressions of rupestrian art in central Cuba.  In the Caguanes National Park there are also other ecosystems such as Manglares or Swamp. The first one is the refuge of countless land and marine fauna species. The second one is an ecosystem located in the center of the Southern limit of the park and is divided by an ecosystem of grassland and another one of bad drainage forest. One of the singular features of this national park is the group of stone formations called Piedra Cays, which are surrounded by the sea and have coastal cliffs, natural arches and sea niches that serve as refuges for many species of flora and fauna. The largest colonies of Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis nesiotes) in Cuba live in the Guayaberas Swamp.
